Monday Mayhem – Typecasting

Do you have a type?

I’m working on Easy Bake Lovin’ (Play Dates #2), and one of the plot points is that the heroine is about as opposite the hero’s usual type. Their attraction stirs some not-so-subtle commentary, which, in turn, leads to hurt feelings and confusion.

“Type” seems a shallow plot point on first glance, but when you think about it, most of us DO have some characteristics we gravitate toward. Types can be based on appearance, common interests and passions, and our attraction can be conscious, or sub-conscious.

Weird example: Most of my celebrity crushes were born within a year or so of the man I eventually married.

1960 was a magical year.

Obviously, this was not an intentional thing. I didn’t go looking for a man who was born within months of Colin Firth or John Taylor from Duran Duran. It just happened that way.

And upon noticing that, I realized that they all share similar physical attributes – each just a shade over six feet tall, dark not-quite wavy hair, dark eyes, squarish jaw. Check this out:

Colin plays it a little bit stuffy

John’s still rock ‘n roll

My combo deal

Fodder scoffs at this, of course, but that’s okay. It works for me, and that’s all that matters. And when I really want to bug him, I tell him I’m going to frame this:

How about you? Do you have a type?

  1. Your post made me laugh. I can totally you picture framing those side by sides.ahahahaha

I think type is an excellent plot point and it is something new. That is a creative idea.

I completely believe about being attractive to types. I love the clean shaven man. A man who is really focussed on family and is really good to their mom. No drinking or smoking. Not too tall so I can get really great hugs. One who loves to travel just as much as me. Same political and social views. Well I’ve pretty much just described my boyfriend so all is well!

I can’t wait to read what you come up.

  2. I don’t think ‘type’ is necessarily limited to physical attributes, either. There might be other things that are appealing. I mean, a cutie is great, but can he make people laugh? Can he fix stuff? Does he know how to make pancakes? How many flannel shirts are hanging in his closet? That being said…I really wouldn’t care if Mr. Firth could make pancakes or not!

  3. Hee! Bill really does have a definite Firth vibe. Well done, you! 😀 My type is generally tall, curly-haired or wavy-haired…or just has a very gloriously thick head of hair. And great shoes. My eyes usually go straight to the shoes. I tend to go for dark-haired dudes, too. At this point, anything with a pulse will do….
