I’m one of those people who love summer. Even summers in Arkansas. Oh, it’s hot, but let’s be real, we live in the age of sub-arctic air conditioning. It’s always been easier for me to cool down in the summer than to warm up in the winter. So the switch from living in a place with 10 months of winter to one with 10 months of summer was probably a good thing.
But, no matter where I live, there are some things that are forever linked to summer in my head. Here are a few:
- Cicadas. Now, I’m not saying I enjoy the creepy drone that comes with the seven year infestation, but I do like to hear the sound of a cicada buzzing it’s heart out on a summer evening. For that reason, this is still one of my favorite cartoons ever:
- Sweet corn. You can take the girl out of Central Illinois, but you can’t make her any less corny.
- Daylight Savings Time. I know. Some people hate it, but I love it. I love having more daylight at the end of the day. There’s nothing worse than coming home from work in the dark.
- The drone of a fan. Due to allergies and other sensitivities, we do sleep with a fan in the bedroom. But sometimes…on Sunday afternoons…when it’s too hot to do anything else…I like to turn on the portable fan in my little hideaway here, and snuggle in for a small snoozle.
Rice Krispies Treats. Confession: I am a bit of a snob when it comes to Rice Krispies Treats. I only eat the homemade kind. And, for some reason, I only make them in the summertime. No idea why. Most likely some subliminal advertising from my childhood run amok.
Well, welcome to August, my friends. Summer will be winding down (except here – we hang on until October) and you know what comes next!!!!
What about you? What are some of the signs of summer for you?
Loved this post! Since moving to Ottawa, the signs of summer have changed for me. I’ve never lived in a more active city. Canoes and kayaks out on the water; beach volleyball; bikers, joggers, and walkers along the canal path; beaver tails; yoga on Parliament Hill; soccer on every available field in the city; and lots and lots of ice cream. 🙂 It’s such a glorious time of year!
Umm…beaver tails? Just curious…
These are beaver tails, A-M: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7161/6729473203_cc615c818d_z.jpg – Deep-fried deliciousness, sprinkled with cinnamon, and you can add whatever other toppings you’d like. *drools*
Seasons in Indiana –
Winter: I need to go inside and warm up, it’s freezing out here.
Spring: Isn’t it ever going to warm up? And stop raining?
Summer: I need to go outside and warm up, it’s freezing in my office.
Late Summer/Fall: Ah-choo! And tell the damn cicadas and katydids to shut up.
Have to say the change of locale for me is an eye opener. Those cicadas are something else. I’ve never heard such a thing. Not quite used to the thunderstorms in summer. But like you said we have the A/C plus we are enjoying all the ceiling fans too.I think I will enjoy have four seasons. I’m right there with you on Daylight savings. I love sitting outside at 8 or 9 and it is still light out. Now off to the fair like the kind I used to go to as a kid but is non-existed in my hometown now.
There are still times I have to turn on a fan just so I can fall asleep to the sound of it. Cicadas, June bugs, even tree frogs. All lovely sounds of summer. My most loved moment of summer is the lightning bugs, there is just nothing like seeing them appear.
